One of the reasons I travel to Italy every summer is for the country’s unique seafood offerings. Now with this “hot off the press release” news maybe I can stay home to enjoy those sea-specialities every day of the year at Wynn:

Costa di Mare, the signature Italian restaurant at Wynn Las Vegas, has introduced an all new program to showcase seafood that is hard to find in the United States. The new initiative will bring a variety of exotic species to the restaurant that are typically only available along the Italian coastline. Executive Chef Mark LoRusso’s relationships with local fishermen have allowed him to identify species that are rarely found outside of the Mediterranean coastline in order to introduce guests of the restaurant to more adventurous fare.

Costa di Mare sources up to three weekly shipments of 220 pounds of fish that are hand selected by Wynn’s dedicated seafood purveyor in Italy. On each visit, guests can expect dishes featuring seafood selections from various ports of call on the Italian coastline. Every new shipment is a seasonal treasure showcasing the diverse and enticing offerings of seafood for guests to explore.

Examples of the exceptional selection of seafood include:

Tuscan Sea Palamita: A relative of the tuna and mackerel, the silky mouthfeel of this fish is prepared raw as carpaccio with artichokes and a drizzle of gremolata or poached with olive oil to create a delicate tonnato sauce for beef tartare.
Cicala di Mare: This big, flat, prehistoric lobster is even more refined than the everyday lobster as it lives exclusively in pristine waters. Guests can enjoy it grilled whole over charcoal or prepared over pasta with tomato and garlic.
Mantis Shrimp: The sweetest of all sea crustaceans, this serves as a popular first course simply grilled and served with lemon and parsley.
Mormora: A lesser known fish with a moist flesh that, when roasted whole with olive oil and white wine, provides the essence of rustic simplicity.
Centrolofo: Playing a starring role in the restaurant’s signature appetizer frittura di paranza Mediterranea, this assortment of Mediterranean fish evokes nostalgia of the exquisite Italian coastline. The frittura features a spectacular antipasto of fried Mediterranean fish, crispy artichoke and pickled lemon.
Costardelle: A bluefish traditional to Messina in Sicily, which is usually served fried.
Menu items are subject to availability and seasonality. Costa di Mare is open for dinner service nightly from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and is located on the Wynn Esplanade. For reservations, please call 702-770-DINE.

The Forbes Travel Guide Four Star award-winning restaurant showcases a menu created nightly by chef Mark LoRusso, voted “Best Chef” in Las Vegas by the Southern Nevada Hotel Concierge Association. Featuring fresh Mediterranean seafood, house-made pastas and over forty varieties of fresh fish and shellfish flown in daily, guests can expect an unforgettable evening complete with a view overlooking a serene lagoon.

Property Brothers start new TV season helping homeowners

11 Jul

A new season of cable television’s  hit series Property Brothers: Buying and Selling starring the popular Scott twin brothers from Las Vegas premieres on Wednesday, July 13, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HGTV. The series features contractor Jonathan and real estate expert Drew as they combine their skills to help families with two critical real estate moments – selling one home and buying another.

In the season premiere, Jonathan and Drew meet a family eager to sell their suburban home for a life closer to the city. The family’s home, built in the 1990s and never updated, is in need of a complete overhaul before its ready to sell.

The homeowners soon learn that metropolitan real estate comes at a premium and they’re underwhelmed by the pricey options that fall short of their expectations. In the end, the family relies on the Scott brothers’ expertise to help them successfully navigate the sometimes difficult process of buying and selling.

UFC hero Conor McGregor parties at Intrigue

10 Jul

Conor McGregor hosted Saturday night’s UFC 200 fight weekend after-party at Intrigue, the hot new luxury nightclub in Wynn Las Vegas.

The notorious Irish fighter from Dublin arrived just before midnight and received a thunderous welcome from an adoring packed house. On the club’s stage, with the Irish flag proudly draped over his shoulders, Conor thanked  the crowd  for joining his party.. From the dance floor just below, countless fans  reached out for a chance to touch the fighter. He obliged many and even posed for several ’ “selfie” photos.

Conor was quickly surprised with a custom multi-layer birthday cake to help him celebrate Vegas-style a few days before turning 28. After much hoopla and interacting with fans, he settled down at his VIP table with girlfriend Dee Devlin and soaked up the fun,  DJ Conflict’s music  and the  club’s electric  energy until the wee hours.

Before heading to  Intrigue, Conor and his group dined at Andrea’s in Encore at Wynn  where they shared Executive Chef Joseph Elevado’s sushi, sashimi and Asian specialty dishes.

Celine then Britney credited with the revolution of Vegas Strip entertainment

10 Jul

After a visit to Madrid, Spain , I have safely arrived at my favorite Italian hideaway in Tuscany for my annual family vacation trip. In my absence a number of Vegas VIPs have kindly agreed to fill in for me with guest columns. Here today (MON) is Jason Gastwirth, VP of Entertainment for Caesars properties on the Strip- responsible for Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez , Lionel Richie , Pitbull and other “big names” at Planet Hollywood and for Celine Dion, Elton John, Rod Stewart and Mariah Carey at Caesars Palace plus Donny & Marie with Olivia Newton John at the Flamingo  in addition to welcoming America’s Got Talent winners Mat Franco to the Linq and Paul Zerdyn to Planet Hollywood.

This afternoon (MON) the country trio of titan superstars Reba McEntire, Brooks & Dunn get ready to return to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace tomorrow night (TUES) with a major and extraordinary onstage Facebook live-chat .

RL Reba Brooks & Dunn

Jason who is now readying two new shows for the former Jubilee theater at Bally’s explains why Las Vegas has ramped up the entertainment action on the Strip for a host of superstars now happily calling our desert paradise home.

How Las Vegas went from the “Last Hurrah” for stars to today’s entertainment capital of the world By Jason Gastwirth

Back in the day, entertainment wasn’t exactly Las Vegas’ strongest suit. Gambling was the primary reason visitors flocked to the desert oasis. The lure of slot machines, buckets full of coins and dreams of big payouts was all it took to capture someone’s attention back then.

The artists who performed residencies here in those days generally were at the end of their careers. The Las Vegas stage was their last hurrah before quietly slipping into retirement.

But this is not the Las Vegas we know and love today. The city is now the entertainment capital of the world as visitors from all over the globe travel to see their favorite artists perform. But how did we get here?

The reason you see the best of the best with their name in lights, performing night after night to sold-out shows is simple really. Call it luck or as we like to think, pure genius, but Caesars Entertainment’s impact on Las Vegas has changed the rows of marquees you see today.

Las Vegas is now known as a place for icons, rising stars and mid-career artists alike, rather than a place to end one’s career. This shift in the city can be credited to Caesars Palace and Celine Dion with the introduction of The Colosseum.

In 2000, Caesars Palace planned to renovate its anchor showroom, Circus Maximus, which housed many iconic and legendary performers, such as Frank Sinatra and Diana Ross. However, the plan was altered when the hotel was approached with a unique and exciting business venture with Celine Dion and co-promoter AEG Live that would forever change the landscape of entertainment.

Once this partnership was finalized, the Circus Maximus renovation was cancelled to make way for an even grander and more spectacular venue that would be designed and built exclusively for Celine Dion and her production, A New Day…, together working to revitalize and change the entertainment landscape by creating a paradigm shift in the market. The result was The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, which sparked the groundbreaking for a term that is now commonplace in Las Vegas – residencies.

The residency model has stood the test of time as other trends within the city have come and gone. Ten years after Celine Dion made her debut on the Strip, Caesars Entertainment decided to redefine the residency and explore the model’s potential with a different audience.

In 2013, the company ushered in a new era of entertainment by changing the format of the typical residency and brought a new kind of pop music headliner to Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino – Britney Spears. Britney took the Strip by storm. From the big reveal in the Mojave Desert to her residency extension last year, fans and visitors to Las Vegas can’t get enough of the legendary pop icon with record-setting numbers.

The notion of this residency model re-imagined for a younger audience is indicative of Caesars Entertainment’s prowess as an innovator of entertainment within the Las Vegas market. Instead of touring around the world, Caesars Entertainment provides artists the opportunity to bring the artists’ individual creative vision to the stage through customized set pieces, lighting, choreography and the latest technologies.

When it comes to Las Vegas, the fans will travel to see their favorite artist perform. The luxury of allowing an artist to be housed in one, intimate venue is our greatest asset, one that was attractive to the eyes of many other performers.

So we continued to push the boundaries. Not only does The Colosseum cater to powerhouse Celine Dion, but it showcases the legendary voices of Elton John, Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey and Reba McEntire, Kix Brooks & Ronnie Dunn, and Jerry Seinfeld. In the first four months of 2016, we premiered residencies at The AXIS at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino along with our co-promoter partner Live Nation with global superstar Jennifer Lopez, music icon Lionel Richie and sensational hitmaker Pitfall.

Caesars Entertainment has created one of the most powerful line-ups of performers ever – not just in Las Vegas but in the world, solidifying Caesars as THE leader in bringing world–class entertainment to the famed Las Vegas Strip.

And we didn’t stop there. Caesars Entertainment has capitalized on the ever-changing neon city. As the number of visitors to Las Vegas grows each year, the demand to provide greater entertainment and nightlife experiences for our guests grows as well.
In conjunction with the opening of Britney: Piece of Me at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, Caesars Entertainment also made a statement by introducing The AXIS. This modern marvel of a venue defined the VIP and nightclub experience and merged it with live entertainment.

The AXIS brings a contemporary feeling of intimacy and excitement as a true nexus of nightlife and entertainment. With state-of-the-art technology, including one of the largest proscenium theaters in the United States, and world-class VIP tables and bottle service operated by Drai’s, The AXIS is a one-of-a-kind theater.

Through its modern venues and bigger-than-life headliners, Caesars Entertainment built a destination for accomplished artists in their prime. The power has shifted now. The fans travel to see the artist, allowing them to experience a live concert in ways that couldn’t be done anywhere else.

The company has consistently been at the forefront of entertainment and has set a high standard for Las Vegas, one that has forced others in the industry to follow.
Billboard Magazine, the leading global destination for charts, news, trends and innovations in music, recently named Caesars Entertainment as the 3rd largest live entertainment promoters in North America (#5 worldwide).

In addition, The Colosseum at Caesars Palace was named the #1 Top Small Venue for the 11th time, and The AXIS at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino was named the #3 Midsize Venue (#2 in the United States).

With a number of awards to its name, as well as the most successful headlining residencies in Las Vegas, Caesars Entertainment is truly a pioneer in Las Vegas entertainment, which is now the primary driver of visitation to the city based on recent research conducted by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, and will continue to offer the best entertainment experiences.

As the market expands with a host of new venues across the city, we are proud to have laid and continue to strengthen the foundation for the city at large to be a true world leader in this form of entertainment.

Tomorrow (TUES) with the opening of the new Baz-StarCrossed Love show at the Palazzo and Thursday’s superstar celebration of the 10th anniversary of The Beatles LOVE show at the Mirage we have a full week ahead of us with more guest columns and complete coverage of all the celebrity action including Wednesda’s 20th annual Hooters beauty pageant at the Palms.

Opening night of Idaho is a “spud-tacular” success

10 Jul

Following three days of previews that left fans cheering for more, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts celebrated the opening night of its new “mash-hit,” IDAHO! THE COMEDY MUSICAL, exclusively at Reynolds Hall last night ( SAT)

Serving as The Smith Center’s second homegrown production, IDAHO! performed to an enthusiastic full house, kicking off its debut with a standing ovation as guests roared with applause.

To celebrate the exciting new show, Mayor Carolyn Goodman kicked off the opening night festivities with a special proclamation ceremony, where she declared July 9, 2016 “IDAHO! THE COMEDY MUSICAL DAY.” The ceremony took place at Symphony Park against a “spudtacular” backdrop featuring an epic 18-wheel, 6-ton Big Idaho® Potato Truck.

Following the proclamation ceremony, guests were invited to dust off their boots inside Reynolds Hall as IDAHO! brought to life a hilarious new love story. Cassie Purdy, a mail-order bride from Ohio, arrived to Idaho to marry the notorious Jed Strunk, a real toad gagger who’s got the personality of a festered wart and enough money to buy every last spud in town. Upon her arrival, Cassie encountered the handsome Whip Masters, falling in love to Strunk’s dismay and setting in motion a whirlwind of events that ended in three couples discovering—or rediscovering—the loves of their lives.

The cast of 18 was led by Alex Ellis as Ida Dunham, Carmen Ruby Floyd as Mavis White Eagle, Jessica Fontana as Cassie Purdy, Nathaniel Hackmann as Whip Masters, Matt Loehr as Slim Johnson, Jen Perry as Aunt Pearlie, Jay Rogers as Uncle Fate and Paul Vogt as Jed Strunk. Together, they thrilled the crowd with original hits like “Boise’s Just as Noisy as Can Be,” “IDAHO!” and “Don’t Be Thinking.”

To conclude the evening’s events, guests enjoyed country music, complimentary wine and delectable potato-themed hors d’oeuvres with all the fixin’s at a special Ida-Ho-Down immediately following the show. Patrons also had the rare opportunity to mingle with the cast and creative team.

IDAHO! THE COMEDY MUSICAL performs now through Sunday, July 17. Tickets start at $19 and can be purchased at The Smith Center Box Office, by phone at 702-749-2000 or online at
